Helping Restore Ability Open House

Helping Restore Ability is a comprehensive resource for Texans with disabilities and their families to find the care they need. The organization was founded on the vision of a future in which no Texan with a disability lacks the resources they need to live a full and independent life.

Learn more about Helping Restore Ability by visiting Urban Alchemy on September 18 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. There will all kinds of information about the organization and representatives who can answer your questions.

ABOUT HELPING RESTORE ABILITY

Helping Restore Ability was founded as the Arlington Handicapped Association in 1977 by a young man with polio, Sam Provence, and his determined friends. Sam is believed to be the last victim diagnosed with polio in Tarrant County.

Sam and his friends believed with an unswerving passion that a physical disability should not keep a person from participating fully in society and living an independent and active life.

As services expanded beyond the city limits, Arlington Handicapped Association was renamed the Handicapped Resource Association in 1988. Beginning in 1999, Arlington Handicapped Association began doing business as Helping Restore Ability, a name that reflects the goals and mission without the implied restrictions of the word ‘handicapped.’ The legal name was changed to “Helping Restore Ability” in 2011.

Fireworks Watch Party: Bar Stool Brothers + Light Up Arlington

Light Up Arlington in Arlington, TX is a family-friendly street party held every July 3 in the hours leading up the Independence Day fireworks show. It's one of the city's favorite traditions, it's held in our neighborhood (Downtown Arlington), and we can't wait to join in on the fun!

We'll be blocking off our parking lot, so bring your lawn chairs. Our kitchen will be open, and since the City has asked for no glass containers to be outside, we're offering $10 cans of wine (your choice of red, white and rose) and $5 cans of beer.

The catchy bluesy-rock of Bar Stool Brothers will keep the party going from 7:00 - 9:45 p.m. until the fireworks start.

Visit lightuparlington.com for street closure information.

Artist Reception with Suzy Ware

Meet artist Suzy Ware at this reception held to launch the new exhibition of her watercolors, now showing at Urban Alchemy.

ARTIST BIO: IN HER OWN WORDS

Throughout most of my working life, I was always involved in something creative. I have a degree in interior design, but life took me in a different direction. My husband and I owned an arts & crafts store, Craft King, and ‘tis the Season Christmas stores where I used my creative talents doing every craft and making floral arrangements and decorated trees for the Christmas stores. I also worked for an importer as lead designer of Christmas merchandise and supervised and decorated showrooms. My life in design continued as I joined my husband in his manufacturing business creating products for manufacture and import. After several years, we received an offer we couldn’t refuse and sold that business.

Not quite ready to retire, we bought a franchise business but there was nothing creative at all in it except the marketing. I really missed making things, so I started taking watercolor classes, which I love. In 2015, I studied with Ann Winchester, Linda Strickland and Thomas Schaller in Vancouver, Canada and with Michael Holter in Ft. Worth in 2017.

My work has been exhibited at the Society of Watercolor Artists Show at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in 2015 and 2016 and Ellis County's Art on The Square's Paint Historic Waxahachie Plein Art Exhibit in 2017. I won 1st Place in Cleburne Friends of the Cultural Arts Show in 2014 and Azel Artist of the Month for Society of Watercolor Artists in Ft. Worth in April 2015.

My creative urge has done nothing but grow, so I’m now combining my old craft skills with new found watercolor skills and sharing what I make with you. I hope you enjoy it!

Taste of Spain: Wine Tasting with Nicole Andrus

Hosted by Urban Alchemy and Folio Fine Wine Partners, this exclusive wine-tasting event will transport you to the wine country of Spain. Your guide on this tour is Nicole Andrus, who has spent a lifetime cultivating her incredible talents for wine-making, the science of wine, and domestic and overseas wine traditions and markets.

The event will begin with welcoming comments and a small pour of Fillaboa Albarino, followed by three flights of two wines each, including:

  • Taste of Place:  Vinculo and Condado de Haza
  • Priorat:  Porrera and Embruix
  • Ageing:  Pesquera Crianza and Reserva

Throughout the evening, you'll also enjoy cheese and charcuterie featuring Spanish cheeses and meats.

Tickets are only $10 per person and must be purchased in advance via our website. Click here to purchase.

Our sincere thanks to Folio and Ms. Andrus for selecting Urban Alchemy to host her only appearance in Arlington.

About Nicole Andrus

Raised in Napa Valley, where her parents founded Pine Ridge Winery in 1978 and Archery Summit Winery in Oregon in 1994, Nicole has done everything from pitch-forking grape stems and performing lab analysis to assisting her parents with sales and marketing in domestic and foreign markets. Through her work overseas she developed a great interest in travel and the European culture, thus choosing to spend a year of high school in Switzerland learning German, and then a semester of college in Ecuador, where she developed a keen interest in the Spanish language, the Galapagos Islands, and botany.

Upon her return to the U.S., Nicole obtained an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Molecular Plant Systematics. Over time she yearned to return to her roots in the wine business and to once again live overseas, so she accepted a position in the Research and Development department at Bodegas Miguel Torres in Catalunya, Spain, combining her scientific background with her longtime affinity for wine.

After working at Torres for two and a half years, Nicole served as an independent wine consultant for various Spanish wineries interested in exporting their wines to the U.S. market.  In 2005, Nicole joined Folio Fine Wine Partners as their Spanish Imports Specialist and has since helped Folio to negotiate importing agreements with multiple estates from Spain including: Fillaboa, Palacios Remondo, Vall Llach and Grupo Pesquera. Nicole divides her time between liaising with producers, hosting groups in Spain, creating new material for Folio’s marketing department, and assisting the sales team by traveling to the U.S. to educate accounts and consumers on Folio’s top-notch portfolio of Spanish estates.

Nicole is also co-founder of Niso Wine Tours, a high-end Spanish wine tourism agency, and United Vintners Abroad, a Spanish wine consulting company.

Nicole currently resides in Spain with her husband and two children.
